Election Splendor

Posted December 18, 2007 by BDP Staff

We talked with Cleveland cartoonist Harvey Pekar about our idea that Ohio should go first.

Then, Los Angeles-based community leader and activist Joe Hicks explains why he believes our election systems isn’t so broken that it needs fixing.

And, Toledo based blogger, Lisa Renee Ward, says her favorite redesign is instant run-off voting. She blogs at: Glass City Jungle.

Take a look at Harvey Pekar’s Your Billion Dollar Comic Strip

  1. Thanks for including me, I really enjoyed listening to this segment and hearing from Harvey Pekar (excellent drawing!) and listening to what Joe Hicks had to say. While part of my goal is the whole voter education/inspiration aspect, Joe made some very valid points when he was sharing his thoughts on people who do not participate in our voting process.

I do believe we need the primary process, but I do think that if some sort of a ranked choice or instant run-off system was used nation wide for the primaries it might create a better outcome. Using Ohio as an example, by the time the primaries come to us, many candidates have dropped out, so the current system actually reduces our ability to have a say. I’d also advocate for a shorter time frame for the primaries, this would also end some of the position jockeying some states are now doing to try to increase their influence in the primary system.
